Midcentury Modern Time Capsule in L.A. on Market for the First Time

A midcentury modern home built by architect Richard Nevara as his personal residence is now on the market for the first time, for $1,382,000.

Built in 1958, the time capsule in Los Angeles has been in the family ever since.

“It’s only had one owner,” says Darla Hau-Pacheco with Pelegrino Properties, who represents the listing.

Nevara purchased the land in the Hollywood Hills and built it for his future family, says his son, Brett King Nevara.

Almost 10 years after the home was built, Nevara married his wife, Carolyn, and the couple raised their children there. Now, both Richard and Carolyn have died, and Brett has decided to sell.

“It’s a beautiful home. I’m still in awe,” Brett says. He has childhood memories of zipping around the Chinese elm in the back patio on his tricycle. Now, that elm is “quite huge,” he says.

The cedar-wrapped home sits at the end of a cul-de-sac. Koi ponds flank the front door.

Inside, the original finishes include exposed redwood beams, teak wood, and natural stone flooring.

Walls of windows offer views of the treetops and skylights bring in natural light. Decks and patios expand the living area outside.

The three-bedroom, 1,700-square-foot layout has gone largely untouched over the decades. It was built for a family and built to last.

“This place stayed in such great shape because he knew he was building it for himself,” Brett says. There’s a newer roof on the place, and a new owner may decide to update the kitchens and baths.

Another of his father’s designs recently popped up on the market. Two years ago, a similar two-bedroom “sister house” nearby came on the market for $1.2 million, also for the first time and also in original condition. It was sold two months later, for $1,175,000.
