Try Before You Buy? Frank Lloyd Wright House Up for Rent—Only $3,200 a Month

Do you dream of living in a house built by Frank Lloyd Wright, but believe you haven’t enough dough for a pricey down payment?

A Prairie-style property in Glencoe, IL, built by Wright in 1914, is now on the market for $724,000. It’s listed with Julie Deutsch of @properties.

But in an interesting twist for budget-conscious Wright fans, the four-bedroom residence is also available for rent, for $3,200 per month.

The North Shore community of Glencoe is 25 miles north of Chicago, and the home sits in the village’s Ravine Bluffs neighborhood, where plans originally called for 25 Wright-designed homes with Jans Jensen-designed landscaping. However, only five were built.

This 2,207-square-foot home—referred to as the William F. Kier House—features three completed levels. It has honorary landmark status, which means that modifications can be made if the next occupant is the owner.

Tenets of Wright’s designs—including a floor-to-ceiling brick fireplace, easy flow between rooms, and a sense that the natural setting outside is part of the design—are immediately apparent.

The kitchen has been modernized, and the older of the 2.5 baths flaunts a chic black-and-white design heavy on geometrics.

Near the fourth bedroom, on the lower level, is a full bath with a steam shower. Opportunities to further customize for the next owners include creating a master suite (there currently isn’t one) by combining two upstairs rooms.

Open walls between several rooms that are built into the design—featuring simple lines—mirror railings and half-walls around the backyard deck. In the living room is a wall of stained-glass windows in a tuliplike design. A two-car garage is attached to the home, making Chicago winters more bearable.

Earlier this year, a Wright-designed home (dubbed the Sherman Booth Cottage)—also in Glencoe’s Ravine Bluffs neighborhood—sold for $550,000.

The new owner filed an application with the village to demolish the structure in its entirety, and was granted a permit, which the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy is fighting.
