Last year, Whoopi Goldberg sold her Pacific Palisades, CA, home faster than you can say “Sister Act.” The very same mansion is now back on the market for $9.6 million.
As we reported in 2018, the co-host of “The View” placed her sumptuous art deco digs on the market for $8,795,000 in January. By February, the luxury property had been snapped up by a buyer for $8.8 million.
Now those buyers—who have made only minor renovations to the space—have turned around and bumped up the asking price by nearly a million bucks.
Even without many alterations, the higher price is justified, according to listing agent Dan Urbach with Compass.
“Sold over the asking price nearly two years ago, the property is back on the market at a higher price point, due to the resiliency of the Pacific Palisades and Palisades Riviera markets,” he said.
Urbach added that the location is also a major factor. “This architectural gem is located on one of the most desirable and coveted streets in the Riviera section of Pacific Palisades.”
Along with its eye-catching design, the former home of the award-winning comedian has quite a Hollywood history.
Originally built in 1933 for Vicki Baum, author of “Grand Hotel,” it was later owned by the late English screen star David Niven. Goldberg, whose given name is Caryn Elaine Johnson, owned the gated estate from 1993 through 2018.
Set on just over a half-acre, the main house is surrounded by lush landscaping and mature trees. The approximately 7,000-square-foot main house features many original elements, including a black-and-white checkered floor in the foyer, as well as crown moldings, fireplaces, and a vintage pub.
A large, updated kitchen with a huge island with bar seating and stainless-steel appliances looks out to the swimming pool. The living room includes a fireplace and French doors that open out to a patio.
The layout also features a dining room, a library with built-ins, and a family room. The five en suite bedrooms include the master suite, which comes with an onyx-clad master bathroom. The grounds also include a separate guesthouse.
Although the current owners didn’t stay long, their original goal wasn’t just a simple flip. According to Urbach, they had planned to restore and expand the home, but never began the project and instead found another home that was better suited for their family.
Indeed, the listing notes that the property provides options for the next owner, stating that it is “an exceptional opportunity to restore the house to its 1930s grandeur, or build anew on one of the premier streets in the Palisades Riviera.”
When not in Manhattan at the ABC studios of “The View,” Goldberg lives in New Jersey. The talented 63-year-old performer is one of the few to have won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy, and Tony awards.
