The stylish apartment once belonging to fashion designer Kate Spade, who died in 2018, has sold, according to the Real Deal.
The late style icon and her husband, Andy Spade, purchased their long-time Manhattan home in 1999 for $2.675 million, the New York Post asserts.
Located on the third floor, the 3,000-square-foot space no longer displays the quirky taste and decor of its past owner, except for the lipstick-red library, which can be seen from past photos, when Spade lived there.
However, it’s clear that the gracious space would attract a designer’s eye.
The three-bedroom abode faces over Park Avenue, and features an octagonal-shaped foyer, which leads to a living room with a wood-burning fireplace and large windows. The welcoming space is flanked by the corner library (or third bedroom) and formal dining room.
The eat-in kitchen includes a butler’s pantry, and beyond that, the space features a laundry room and additional bedroom and ensuite bath.
The renovated apartment is located in a “sought-after,” fully staffed building with a new fitness center, according to the listing. Plus, it’s conveniently located near the famed hotel the Carlyle, the subway, and Central Park.
Spade’s widower purchased a Mission-style home in the Bay Area at around the time he placed the Upper East Side unit on the market.
In 1993, Kate Spade co-founded the fashion company, Kate Spade New York. In 1999, Spade sold a 56-percent stake in her business to Neiman Marcus Group, and in 2006, she sold the rest of her shares. In 2016, she and her partners launched a new line, Frances Valentine.
On June 5, 2018, Spade died in her apartment by suicide. The property is currently listed as “under contract.”
Randall Gianopulos of Sotheby’s International Realty held the listing.
