Legendary and prolific architect Frank Lloyd Wright is rightly celebrated for his designs—not his rare remodeling jobs.
But we’ve found a Wright renovation on the market if you’re looking for a property graced by greatness. It’s a 6,000-square-foot Italianate-style home Wright renovated in 1908 and 1909, in the near-west Chicago suburb of Oak Park, IL, and its price was just dropped to $1.167 million.
The property has been on the market since the summer of 2018, and the latest drop chops $27,500 off the asking price. The residence is referred to as the Copeland House, named for Dr. William H. Copeland, a surgeon who split his time between Chicago and Cleveland and was the home’s second owner.
Sitting on an acre lot, the Prairie-style home was originally built in 1873, and the current owners have owned the five bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home since 2004.
Located on Forest Avenue, it’s in the heart of the Frank Lloyd Wright Historic District. Around the corner, on Chicago Avenue, you’ll find Wright’s former home and studio. Within a block are four other homes designed by the lauded architect, including the Arthur Heurtley House next door.
What changes did Wright make to the property? Commissioned by Copeland, he added a wraparound porch and designed a coach house, as well as a garage.
The low-pitch hipped roof and built-in dining-room buffet are also Wright’s designs, with a concerted effort to bridge the original Italianate design with his signature Prairie style. This resulted in soaring ceilings and horizontal bands throughout the home.
The next owner could very well expand even further by taking the third floor’s raw attic space and converting it into a studio (or extra family room) or living quarters.
The detached coach house would be ideal for rental income or a place to host visiting guests. It features one bedroom and one bath, plus a living room, kitchen, and dining room.
For a buyer in search of one of Wright’s projects, this is an opportunity to score a one-of-a-kind renovation. While the home wasn’t built by the legend, his handiwork is readily apparent.
