No spin needed here. Famed Republican consultant Mary Matalin has purchased a beautiful brick townhouse in Alexandria, VA, for $2.2 million.
Matalin is married to Democratic political consultant James Carville, and the two may be at odds politically, but are in agreement on great real estate.
The Federal-style abode that dates to 1770 is located in the “Captains Row” neighborhood in the heart of Old Town.
The home was recently renovated, and a few of its historic elements have been preserved, such as 250-year-old pine plank flooring, exposed brick, and original moldings. Modern improvements include the Boffi kitchen, updated baths, and crystal chandelier lighting.
The floor plan includes five bedrooms, 3.5 baths, and three fireplaces. The kitchen opens to a family room with French doors that lead to a slate patio with a tiered, walled garden and an outdoor living room with a gas fire pit and private spa.
The master suite comes with a large living room, fireplace, and private deck overlooking the garden. The top floor includes a game room with views out to the Potomac River.
Head down to the lower level, which has been finished with higher ceilings, a bath, and a private bar with a wine wall and fireplace.
The street itself has serious Old World charm—it’s one of two historic cobblestone streets in Old Town Alexandria.
Last sold in 2014 for $1.3 million, the property came on the market in July for $2,295,000. So Matalin must have used her lobbying skills to knock a few bucks off the price.
Matalin launched her political career as a strategist for the Republican National Committee. In 1992, she ran George H.W. Bush’s re-election campaign, while dating her future husband, then the chief strategist for Bill Clinton’s campaign.
After working on opposing campaigns, the political odd couple went on to marry. Then they documented their experience by co-authoring the best seller, “All’s Fair: Love, War, and Running for President.”
The couple, who have also lived in New Orleans, were featured in Architectural Digest in a townhome they used to own in Old Town Alexandria.
The seller was represented by Charles York with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. The buyer was represented by Greg Doherty, also of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage.
