$4.9M Vacation Retreat on Lake Okoboji Is Iowa’s Most Expensive Listing

realtor.com

Iowa isn’t generally thought of as a tourist destination. But when the Democratic candidates vacate the Hawkeye State and the weather warms, there are a few unbeatable vacation spots where generations of families continue to flock.

In northwest Iowa, which boasts the state’s Great Lakes, the tiny town of Okoboji is one of those places. It’s also home to the state’s most expensive home. On the market for $4.99 million, the vacation retreat was built in 2012 and first landed on the market in July for $5.25 million.

By contrast, the state’s next most pricey listing is a 7,300-square-foot, manorlike estate in Johnston, IA, priced at $2.8 million.

Okoboji doesn’t have a ton of homes for sale—only 22 at last count, with a median list price of $449,000.

“It’s a very popular destination in the Midwest,” says listing agent Sam Brownlee, who is selling the home for his parents, the property’s owners. “A lot of properties do not come up for sale—they’re owned by families.”

Brownlee’s parents purchased the property, and then tore down an older dwelling to build this current, larger abode. He told us that the family also owns another home nearby on the beach and has decided to let this one go.

This picturesque property offers 76 feet of lake frontage right on what’s described as “coveted” Dixon Beach.

The grounds offer sunset views, oak trees, and two additional back lots for additional square footage, with room to build a guesthouse.

A path leads down to the lake, which features a private dock. Outdoor space also includes an outdoor fireplace, plus covered dining and lounging areas.

Inside, the 10,305-square-foot home features five bedrooms, as well as five full bathrooms and two half-baths. There’s also a bunk room, 900 square feet of veranda, and a finished basement.

Featuring an open living plan, the layout includes a living room with a fireplace, a dining area, and a wet bar. The large kitchen features a center island with bar seating. Other spaces include a game room with a pool table, a library with built-in bookshelves, and a spacious master suite.

If all that’s not enough, the surrounding area offers recreational activities like swimming, boating, over 60 miles of trails, and even an amusement park. But it’s the 135-foot-deep lake that’s the main attraction.

“It’s kind of like an oasis in the middle of the cornfields of Iowa,” Brownlee says.
