“Deadwood” creator David Milch has sold his Martha’s Vineyard home. The waterfront compound in Vineyard Haven, on the exclusive island off the coast of Massachusetts, went to a new buyer for $7 million in October, according to local real estate records.
The property had last changed hands for $4 million in 1996. Milch, an Emmy winner, has earned an impressive $100 million over his storied career, writing and producing TV shows such as “Hill Street Blues,” “NYPD Blue,” and “Deadwood.”
But a gambling addiction led to a massive $25 million loss, and he owed the IRS $5 million, according to a recent profile in the New Yorker. To cover their debts, he and wife Rita Stern Milch reportedly sold their home in L.A.’s Brentwood neighborhood for $4.8 million in 2014.
The couple then placed the Martha’s Vineyard property on the market in 2015, asking $7.9 million. A year later, the price was reduced. Three years later, the home finally found a buyer.

The 22-acre property dates to 1880 and includes a main house, a 1,586-square-foot guesthouse, and a 600-square-foot pond house. All offer water views.
The main house is in a Cape Cod style and comes with five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. It features a weathered, shingled exterior with bright blue shutters. The interiors are fully renovated, and the back of the home features a wall of glass facing the water.
A renovated carriage house with four bedrooms is ideal for visitors or extended family, with a covered porch, wood decking, and outdoor shower. The charming pond house sits right at the wonder’s edge.
All three dwellings are a short walk to a 300-foot stretch of private beach for swimming or sunbathing. The property also includes a tennis court.
Milch recently reveled that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, while writing the script for the recent “Deadwood” film, which aired this year on HBO and earned multiple Emmy nominations.
