The filmmaker Barry Levinson has sold his lovely waterfront mansion in Annapolis, MD, for $5 million.
The Academy Award-winning director sold the property in late March, in the middle of the global pandemic. According to the Baltimore Business Journal, the transaction was “brokered through virtual settlement using an e-notary service, e-document signature service, and e-property records service.”
Levinson placed the home on the market in late February for $4.95 million—so the deal was consummated quickly, despite concerns about the novel coronavirus.
The premier waterfront estate, located on Spa Creek, was custom-built for Levinson in 2010, and offers over 6,700 square feet of living space, with four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms. It features four levels with large windows, with splendid views of historic Annapolis, Spa Creek, and the State House dome.
As you enter the home on the main floor, the inviting floor plan opens onto the living room and the gourmet kitchen. Upstairs, an outsize soaking tub overlooks the Annapolis Yacht Club.

The 1,500-square-foot finished basement includes a one-car garage and an entertainment room. For aquatic enthusiasts, there’s over 200 feet of water frontage, complete with a private dock for a 60-foot boat, with an additional slip for a 20,000-pound boatlift.
The home comes with a celebrity connection. The Business Journal reported that the baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. rented the home from Levinson after the ballplayer separated from his first wife, Kelly, in 2015.
Now that Ripken has remarried, to a local judge, it wouldn’t be a shock to discover that he has bought the desirable dwelling from Levinson. The name of the buyer has yet to be revealed in property records.
Levinson, a Baltimore native, first earned wide acclaim with his screenplay and direction of the movie “Diner” in 1982, which is set in his hometown. He went on to win the Academy Award for Best Director for “Rain Man” (1998). Among other films, he also directed “The Natural,” “Good Morning Vietnam,” and “Bugsy.”
