A year after his death, the late Paul Allen continues to make real estate headlines. The Microsoft billionaire’s posh Atherton, CA, estate just came onto the market for $41,488,000.
The exclusive Silicon Valley community has been the home of such tech moguls as Google’s Eric Schmidt, former HP CEO Meg Whitman, and finance executive Charles Schwab, and is often cited as the priciest town in the United States.
And while much of the Bay Area has sky-high real estate prices, the prices in Atherton come out on top. There are currently 50 homes on the market in Atherton with a eye-watering median list price of $7.8 million. Allen’s residence is currently the most expensive listing in the tiny community.
The billionaire, who died last year of cancer at the age of 65, purchased the contemporary mansion in 2013 for $27 million.
“This home is incredible,” says listing agent Courtney Charney, with Parc Agency Corporation. “It’s on nearly 1.9 acres of flat land. This estate is truly a retreat—the layout is ideal for both entertaining and everyday living.”
Built by Pacific Peninsula Group, the home was brand-new when Allen bought it, and the listing details call it “one of Atherton’s finest estates.” It may also be one of the biggest. The massive mansion measures 21,000 square feet, with seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms.
Set on almost 2 acres, the grounds include grassy areas, a meadow, patios, a pool, and two outdoor fireplaces with seating. With multiple areas for sitting and dining, there’s ample opportunity to whip up an outdoor feast with a barbecue and wood-fired pizza oven. There’s also a four-car garage. A guesthouse includes two bedrooms, two baths, and a kitchen.
The main house has an open and airy living room and also features a formal dining room. A sleek, open kitchen comes with two islands, with an adjoining family room with built-ins and a fireplace. There’s also an office, a Dolby home theater, a gym, and a casual eating area that opens onto an outdoor dining space.
The home offers the option of a first-floor master suite with a generously sized bathroom and closet, and another equally impressive master suite on the second floor.
Allen’s estate has been busy unloading his real estate holdings. Last week, a 120-acre parcel in Beverly Hills called “Enchanted Hill,” was newly offered at a discounted $110 million, down from the $150 million ask just last year. Even with the reduction, the price tag made it our most expensive listing of the week.
A co-founder of Microsoft, Allen clearly had an eye for real estate. In addition to his swanky properties, Allen owned the Portland Trail Blazers and the Seattle Seahawks. At the time of his death, he ranked No. 21 on the Forbes 400 list of billionaires, with a net worth of $20.3 billion.
