Up for a Challenge? Consider This Log Home on a Private Island in Wisconsin

Searching for a home on a private island but on a tight budget? You may need to look north, way north.

Right on Red Cedar Lake in the town of Birchwood, WI, in the northwest part of the Dairy State, is this five-bedroom, two-bath log home. Listed for $390,000, the property includes rights to the 2-acre, crescent-shaped private island on this 1,800-acre lake.

Built in 1905, the 2,323-square-foot home has weathered the four-season climate, including fierce winters (115, to be precise). It’s accessible only by boat.

Empty for the past 15 years, the timber structure is still sturdy, the hand-split stone surrounding the fireplace is still intact, and “the foundation is as straight and true as can be,” says listing agent Bruce Weegman.

But the period of disuse comes with necessary repairs.

“Windows are broken, and the place has been vandalized,” says Weegman. “Log structures take constant upkeep. Logs can deteriorate. There are some logs that should be replaced. It needs somebody who has interest in a historic building.”

The residence will possibly need a new roof as well.

“I only once saw some leaking,” he says of the cedar-shake roof, which is about 50 to 75 years old. Also, he adds, “the front porch is in disrepair.”

Despite the home’s daunting repairs and secluded location, says Weegman, “It’s really a magical space. It’s not a gigantic space … but it could house a nice group.”

In fact, the last two owners used the place as a corporate retreat. Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN, are two hours away by car, and the closest major city, Rice Lake, is 15 miles away.

The area isn’t as busy as other warm-weather lake retreats of the north, Weegman says. Red Cedar Lake is “a great alternative to bumper-to-bumper traffic to Brainerd, MN.”

Regarding the community, he says, “there’s nearly 4,000 acres of clear water. It’s what I call an old-money lake. It doesn’t have a lot of bars, resorts, and restaurants and not a lot of boat traffic. Very wealthy people own on that lake.”

The next owner will also need to purchase rights to a 1-acre lot marked by shoreline. “Otherwise, you’d be using public space and you’re fighting for dock space,” says Weegman.

To put it mildly, there will be additional costs associated with this purchase—but to call your own private island home is pretty darn priceless.
