Duggar Watch: Jim Bob and Michelle Finally Flip Arkansas Mansion

Brett Ralston

Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, stars of the reality TV show “19 Kids and Counting,” have successfully flipped one heck of a house. A Northwest Arkansas mansion renovated by the famous family sold in mid-February for $1.53 million.

The couple purchased the 10,000-square-foot residence in Springdale, AR, for $230,000 in November 2014. At that time, the oversize mansion was in sad shape.

The Duggars proceeded to work their magic, transforming the once run-down residence into a luxe estate. They hoisted it onto the market for a hefty $1.8 million last May.

The mansion had its price shaved to $1.65 million soon after its initial splash on the market. By July, the Duggars had discounted it to $1.45 million, before reducing the price even further to $1.1 million in September.

It disappeared from the market for a bit last fall, and in December, the couple relisted the home and bumped up the asking to $1.38 million.

Why? Well, when we first laid eyes on the family’s handiwork nearly a year ago, the enormous home was sparkling—but empty and a bit cavernous.

For its return to the market in December, it was rephotographed and stylishly staged. With four bedrooms, 5.5 bathrooms, and an abundance of other rooms, the home takes a lot of furniture to make it feel homey. However, the decision to furnish the place might be what finally enticed a buyer—the listing details note the furnishings would convey with the sale. A truly move-in ready touch.

The strategy paid off in a sale higher than the asking price. Only the couple knows if they cleared a profit, once they factor in time, effort, and other associated costs. Either way, the result is certainly a win for the new owner.

Built in 1969, the “one-of-a-kind” curved residence was apparently modeled on Frank Lloyd Wright’s round house in Phoenix.

When you enter the house, a 20-foot-high, two-sided stone wall leads to an open layout with a fireplace. The kitchen, living, and dining space meld together and feature walls of windows opening out to a huge patio.

The interior boasts three kitchens, a lower-level game room and lounge, a screening room, an office, gym, and large bedrooms. Notable features include the spiral staircase, original Vermont slate tile flooring, walnut tongue-and-groove ceilings, and original walnut doors. And, of course, those eye-catching curves.

All that said, it took a while to find the right buyer. Given that the median list price in Springdale hovers around $201,000, the length of time it took to sell this million-dollar property isn’t a huge shock.

A spokesperson for the couple told People magazine that the Duggars had been flipping homes even before their hit reality show.

“For years, they turned flipping homes into family projects,” the magazine reported. “The Baylor Mansion is their biggest flip yet, aside from building their own home, which was larger, but much simpler.”

Tom Joseph with Weichert Realtors-The Griffin Company, Springdale, represented the sellers. Anthony Smith with United Country NWA Home & Farm Realty represented the buyer.
