$3.9M Home Purportedly Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright’s Son Seeks a Buyer

A 6,000-square-foot hilltop home in Grayslake, IL, is immediately recognizable as a Wright design.

But, surprise! The owner claims this home was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Jr., the son of the legendary architect. This contention, however, is still in doubt, because the blueprints for the home have yet to be found.

The current listing with Jayne Petty of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices has been available since May 2019. However, the property has bounced on and off the market since 2016, always at the same price of $3,900,000.

Perhaps it’s because the median list price in Grayslake—a far northwest suburb of Chicago, in Lake County—is $228,500.

The location is 50 miles from downtown Chicago, a two-hour train ride or an hour’s drive away. Most of Frank Sr.’s projects are in the near-west suburbs of Oak Park or River Forest, or in North Shore communities like Glencoe. If either of the Wrights are connected to this home, it would be the only Wright-designed property in Grayslake.

Built in 1952 for the Kopp family, the five-bedroom, five-bathroom home features a unique starlike shape (most apparent in the living room) and sits on 30 acres, with a gated entry. As in Wright’s former home in Oak Park, IL, a tree pushes through the structure.

Luxury materials were used for the home’s interiors: onyx, marble, granite, and stone. For an avid home cook or a person who enjoys entertaining, stainless-steel appliances, granite countertops, and a built-in grill are in the kitchen.

With the master bedroom come two bathrooms, ideal for a couple. Green thumbs may rest assured that planting seasons will be on time, thanks to an attached greenhouse.

There’s also an elevator, where the press of a button will whisk you to the lower level. Here, a wet bar, fireplace, living room, indoor firing range, and office await. Changing rooms on this lower level make prepping for pool-time easy—and there’s a retractable wall between this lower level and the outdoor pool.

Other luxury features include indoor and outdoor waterfalls. In keeping with the Wright aesthetic, walls of windows overlook the natural landscape (including a lake) and there are wide, overhanging eaves along the roofline.

Could this attract an entertainer who adores the outdoors and also wants to show off a stunning design? Or a country retreat for a busy city person? Included with the sale is a guesthouse and five-car garage.

The long, arduous process of finding a perfect home just might be worth the wait, if it leads to this potential Wright property.
