Say Aloha to a Modern Maui Manse in the Hills of Haiku for $5.5M

Many properties in Hawaii feature extensive use of natural materials, an easy indoor-outdoor flow, and plantation-style architecture. But there are a few notable exceptions.

Which is what makes this home—a nearly 5,000-square-foot modern manse on Maui—so intriguing.

Listed with Mark Morris of Coldwell Banker Island Properties for $5,495,000, the residence sits within the idyllic coastal-rural region of Haiku, which boasts “a perfect warm, tropical climate with refreshing trade winds and stunning ocean views,” he says.

“There’s very little post-modernist architecture in Hawaii. This is very unusual,” says Morris. “It’s probably the most modern listing in Hawaii.”

Built in 2012, the three-bedroom, three-bathroom home sits on a 15-acre parcel in Haiku. The parcel is composed of four lots that have already been approved for development. “This is also exceptional because county regulations make it difficult and time-consuming to subdivide. You can build a very significant family compound or corporate retreat. Each lot can have a main house and a cottage built on it,” says Morris.

Larger-than-average room sizes and an open layout make this home well suited for entertaining and allow natural sunlight to flow right in. Glass sliders in the kitchen, dining room, and living room—which are all connected—provide access to a huge lanai, while the modern wood-burning fireplace in the interior serves as a true hearth.

For a home chef, the kitchen’s koa woodwork, top-of-the line appliances, and clean lines are sure to appeal. Sliders on one wall of the master suite also lead to the outdoors, with a second floor-to-ceiling window providing further natural light. There’s also an outdoor shower, ideal after a run or day at the beach. Showers elsewhere in the home are crafted from lava stone. For a potential buyer who wants to work from home, a study is already in place.

“It offers a lot of flexibility,” Morris says, explaining why the property might tempt the next buyer. “It’s also in one of the top subdivisions in Haiku. The views are incredible: It overlooks a jungle canopy framed by wide-open ocean views. It’s the most sought-after part of the island to live on.”

“It averages 78 and 79 degrees year-round. It’s a little more temperate than other areas of the island,” he adds. “Haiku is the center for extreme water sports. Most of the technology for water sports has come out of Haiku.”

Lovers of extreme sports are drawn to Maui’s North Shore for mountain biking, water sports, hiking, fishing, and cycling—and, of course, world-class surfing. The area also attracts equestrians.

Potential buyers could include both the design-savvy and second-home owners from the U.S. Southwest and California.

Morris points out that owning the home would not be onerous, because “it’s not a high-maintenance property.” For a buyer in search of a mod retreat in paradise, this one-of-a-kind home offers Aloha spirit in spades.
