Cabernet Dreams? $11.3M Sonoma Compound Comes With Vineyard

Paul Rollins

A 130-acre Sonoma vineyard estate with cabernet vines, awe-inspiring views of San Francisco, and a custom-built home is on the market for $11.3 million.

“It’s the best of so many worlds,” says listing agent Maurice Tegelaar. Known as Castle Road Estate, the secluded compound sits behind the gates at Bartholomew Winery, yet is just 10 minutes to the shopping and dining of Sonoma Plaza. Best of all, it’s only about an hour from San Francisco—so it’s a quick and easy escape out of the city.

The property holds a main modern house inspired by Mexican architecture, painted in an arresting shade of ocher. Built in 2005 by the owners, who have lived on the land since the 1980s, the Agave House is both minimalist and livable.

The Agave House layout includes 7,631 square feet of interior space, with three bedroom suites, four full bathrooms, and two half-bathrooms.

The brightly lit chef’s kitchen is both beautiful and practical and includes a breakfast nook and casual outdoor dining deck. Along with an adobe brick living room, a formal dining room and gallery are positioned to take in the views. A wall of glass sliders open out to a loggia, connecting indoor and outdoor spaces.

For large-scale entertaining, the home contains a lower-level wine cellar and dining room that can seat parties of up to 80 to 90 guests, and can also store wine.

The pool area includes a spa, waterfall feature, and wading pool entry. From your perch in the pool, you can watch the fog roll into the city, take in Salesforce Tower and the skyline, and the towers of the Golden Gate Bridge.

Away from the modern main house, there’s also a five-bedroom vintage farmhouse from 1905.

According to the property’s history, it used to be “a nudist camp or resort,”  Tegelaar says.

“There was a large creek with natural pools, swimming holes, and way back when, the farmhouse pool was the main pool area for the resort.”

The nudists have long since left, but the farmhouse and the refreshing pool remain. The next owners can decide whether it’s bathing-suit optional.

The grounds also include a six-car barn with a workshop, gym, and one-bedroom apartment above. There’s also an art studio, pool, and poolhouse, with the pool deck surrounded by old-growth palm trees.  And the acreage includes 7.5 acres of cabernet vineyards, as well as fruit trees and olive orchards.

“It’s basically your own little resort,”  Tegelaar says.
