It’s Easy To See Why Raven’s Eye in Malibu Is a Killer Deal

It’s hard to believe that this one-of-a-kind home in Malibu, CA, designed by the architect Harry Gesner is back on the market for $9.5 million. That’s nearly one-third off of the home’s 2019 asking price of $14 million. A savvy buyer can now score a killer deal.

Known as Raven’s Eye, its medieval rib-vault arches and flying buttresses bring to mind a smaller, more woodsy version of the iconic Sydney Opera House. Which is no accident.

Gesner’s famous Wave House—just up the Malibu coast—served as inspiration for the Danish architect Jorn Utzon when Utzon designed the Australian landmark.

Both the Wave House and Raven’s Eye have obvious similarities, in their vaulted roofs and their towering glass walls. However, Raven’s Eye is distinctive in the way its natural wood and fire-resistant stone masonry harmonize with the verdant and forested setting.

The house sits on a 1-acre hilltop lot overlooking the ocean and feels much larger than its 4,170 square feet. The spacious feeling comes thanks to the 30-foot-high wood-beam ceilings and massive arched glass walls.

Raven’s Eye features three bedrooms and three bathrooms. Some of the bedrooms offer direct access to more outdoor living space, thanks to expansive decks and balconies. Even more space is provided in a 1957 Airstream trailer nestled among the trees out back.

The fascinating front entry is reminiscent of a hobbit home, but this isn’t an underground lair. Once you step inside, you face a large, step-down great room with three-story ceilings and awe-inspiring views of the Pacific Ocean.

Slate floors underfoot, wood ceilings, pine cabinetry, and stone and cement sinks provide Raven’s Eye with a modern, yet rustic feel.

Out back, there’s a large wooden deck, a pool, and built-in lounges sheltered by the living room balcony. A private outdoor shower allows for washing off salt and sand before entering the house, or just for skinny-dipping.

Raven’s Eye was built in 1997, and the current owner has owned it since 2008, when he paid $3,895,000 for it.

At various points, he’s listed the home for rent for as much as $40,000 per month, which is a bit of a bargain in Malibu’s peak season.
