Bryan Cranston shot the TV series “Breaking Bad” in New Mexico, but he also lived the good life on the California coast during his down time when he was done. The acclaimed actor was actively involved in the construction of a net-zero carbon-footprint beach house, designated LEED Platinum, in Ventura, CA.

He’s now ready to sell the cutting-edge dwelling he dubbed “Three Palms.” It’s on the market for $4,995,000.

“I put my heart, soul and blood, sweat, and often tears into it, and I’m glad, because it was such an artistic endeavor, and yet functional,” said Cranston, as he reflected on the decision to sell the property. “There’s something lovely about creating something with tremendous pride and effort and turning it over … letting someone else take it to the next level of appreciation.”

Built in 2013, the modern, three-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom home measures 2,450 square feet and sits on a beachfront lot with spectacular views. Strategically placed windows and an open design make the home feel much larger.

Green from the word go

The eco-friendly work on the property started even before the foundation of the home was laid. A 1940s-era beachfront bungalow that stood, foundation-free, on the property was carefully deconstructed. Many components of the vintage shack were recycled.

“My goal with this home is to show that living responsibly and living comfortably are not mutually exclusive,” said Cranston in a video documenting the construction. “My wife, Robin, and I want to combine both form and function, and show the world that sustainable living doesn’t mean that there’s no indoor plumbing, or that it will impinge on a modern lifestyle.”

What you see when you enter are the sleek architectural features, like huge sliding glass doors, polished concrete flooring, high-end cabinetry and appliances, and modern furnishings custom-made for the home. Buyers have the option to purchase the furniture, as well as the pieces from Cranston’s personal art collection that adorn the beach house.

Eco-friendly highlights

Assets that are not immediately apparent, but which come into view when you take a closer look, are the home’s ecological and smart features. The architect John Turturro has elaborated on a few of the highlights of this green residence:

  • The use of panels made of titanium on the exterior of the home’s “towers.” This expensive material is able to sustain the ravages of salt air, sand, wind, and rain.
  • A “net-zero carbon-footprint” approach, through the installation of solar panels on the roof and the use of energy-efficient appliances and building materials. As a result, the home has virtually no electricity bill. On sunny days, it produces more energy than it uses, sending the overflow back into the grid.
  • The addition of ceiling fans powered by solar energy help keep the home cool. With the use of cutting-edge insulation materials and systems to keep the temperature at a desired level, a traditional HVAC system wasn’t necessary.

Green, yet luxurious nonetheless

But just because the home is eco-friendly doesn’t mean it’s not luxurious.

“At the end of a private road on a peaceful stretch of beach between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, this home was expertly designed to showcase the best of sustainability and luxury,” said the co-listing agent, John Perkins, who, along with Katie Walsh, has the listing.

Perkins did take the time to tout the home’s environmental friendliness.

“A true net-zero build, the home’s combination of energy efficiency, solar, and recycling systems help it produce as much energy as it uses, making it one of the most remarkable green homes ever built in California,” she says.

Responsible for the “‘remarkable’ build,” Cranston has ideas about an ideal buyer for Three Palms.

“I hope a family buys it, so that their kids and grandkids all come to visit, and they can jump in the ocean and learn how to swim or surf and go for walks on the beach—look at the dolphins that come by almost every morning and afternoon. And end of the day, on the deck, share a glass of wine with friends, as you watch the sunset into the horizon,” he says.

Cranston, 64, landed his first recurring TV role on “Seinfeld,” playing Jerry’s dentist, but became a household name when he landed the leading role as Hal, the hapless dad in the comedy series “Malcolm in the Middle.”

He went on to his iconic role as Walter White in “Breaking Bad,” for which he won three consecutive Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

He’s also appeared in films including “Little Miss Sunshine,” “Argo,” “The Lincoln Lawyer,” and “Trumbo,” for which he received his first Academy award nomination.

In addition, he has excelled on Broadway, playing Lyndon B. Johnson in “All the Way,” which earned him a Tony Award. He most recently starred in the Showtime series “Your Honor.”
