Just three years ago, veteran big leaguer Martin Prado signed a $40 million contract with the Miami Marlins. Now the contract is up and Prado is officially a free agent.

This means the utility infielder could sign anywhere, but his recent home purchase makes us think he might be hanging around South Florida for a bit. Or perhaps he’s prepping for retirement?

What we do know is his new home is located in Coral Gables and he dropped $2.49 million on the Spanish-style estate in early August.

The 4,881-square-foot home is a stellar mix of old and new. The exterior is crisp and clean and doesn’t betray a hint of ostentatious design. Built in 2018, the estate has a Mediterranean aesthetic, thanks to its red tile roof and iron detail. The windows are lined in black, giving it a look today’s buyers love, and there’s a covered terrace out front for relaxing.

However, the interior is full-on 21st century. For starters, it’s a fully equipped smart home, so door locks, temperature control, and alarm activation can all be done on a smartphone.

The home offers six bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms, all of which are roomy and well-appointed. There are also several living spaces, and an ultramodern fireplace is the center of the main living room.

A new kitchen boasts top-of-the-line appliances and a serious modern feel, with sleek, light-wood cabinetry. The marble floor flows from one side of the house to the other, and up through the second level.

There are two outdoor terraces—one off the second floor and the other off the main floor. The main-floor terrace leads out to a large, inviting pool with ample seating and a separate, covered summer kitchen.

Whether he’s settling in for another baseball season in Miami or retiring after a long, fruitful career, there’s no guessing that this house will make for a great place to do either.

Prado, 36, has played for 14 seasons for a variety of teams and made the All-Star team in 2010 with the Atlanta Braves.
