The home belonging to the late, great San Diego Padres star Tony Gwynn has finally sold for $1,429,500.

About four years after the Hall of Famer’s death in 2014 from cancer, his Poway, CA, mansion went into foreclosure. His widow, Alicia Gwynn, owed approximately $2.5 million on the property, which was valued at about $2 million at the time, according to the San Diego Union Tribune. The property went up for auction in 2018, but failed to find a buyer, so the lender took ownership of the home

With the home vacant, neighbors had complained that a squatter was reportedly inhabiting the space. The bank took control and placed the home on the market for $2.12 million in May. The price dropped steadily over the summer months, with no interest.

In September, the bank cut the price to $1.581 million, the price reduction needed to coax a buyer to step up to the plate.

The Gwynn family had owned the residence since 1991, the year it was built in the upscale enclave.

Set on 2 acres, the large space includes seven bedrooms, 5.5 baths, and 7,370 square feet of living space. The grounds include a sport court and a pool with a spa.

Inside, the large public rooms include a living room with a fireplace, a separate formal dining room, and a spacious kitchen with plentiful cabinet and counter space. Adjacent, find a family room with fireplace.

The master bedroom includes an ensuite bath with separate, glassed-in shower. One of the bedrooms includes a hideaway loft space accessed by a ladder.

Details in the Mediterranean home include arched doorways, exposed beams, and large windows that flood the home with sunlight.

Known as “Mr. Padre,” Gwynn starred for 20 seasons for the Padres. The 15-time All-Star won seven Silver Slugger awards and five Gold Glove awards. Considered one of the best hitters in baseball history, he was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007.

Gwynn’s legacy is honored in Poway with a bronze statue, as well as a stretch of road named the Tony Gwynn Memorial Highway.
