Raise Your Glasses! Tavern-Turned-Home Is a Perfect Place for a Toast

In Waterford, VA, Main Street has a long and winding history.

The town in Loudoun County was founded in the 1700s, and its Main Street has gone through a number of incarnations over the centuries. At one point, there was a dry goods store and a hotel on the street. At another point, there was a millinery and a telephone exchange.

A stone structure along the main drag, originally built in 1750, became Talbott’s Tavern sometime in the 1800s. And while we have no official proof from a sudsy source, we’re guessing that the tavern presented a lively scene in its heyday.

Today, the tavern and the adjoining building have been transformed into a lovely home, now on the market for $675,000. The two buildings were combined to create a four-story home that spans 3,754 square feet.

The bottom level has a natural stone floor, stone walls, and an exposed wood beam ceiling. Known as an English basement, it offers a cozy sitting area by a stone fireplace—ideal for enjoying a highball. There’s also a multipurpose workshop space.

The top three floors, though, feature pristine heart-of-pine flooring. Some rooms feature the original exposed beam ceilings, while others have a more modern, smooth white finish. There are a total of four bathrooms and three bedrooms.

The home is rounded out by a few sparkling living spaces: a formal dining room, an office, and a modern kitchen.

The current interior design includes many period pieces, but an array of modern amenities bring together the best of both worlds. The kitchen is fully equipped, with stainless-steel appliances, a farmhouse sink, and ample counter space.

The backyard offers an adorable stone patio flanked by twinkling lights, a great space to entertain and clink glasses beneath the stars.

The next steward of this historic property will have many reasons to toast—and the gorgeous home’s boozy background is just one more reason to raise a glass.
