In a sea of Tuscan-inspired estates and sprawling compounds surrounded by vineyards, a contemporary home in St. Helena, CA, stands out.

Built in 1970, the 3,674-square-foot home has been owned by a designer since 2013. It’s on the market for $3,795,000, listed with Tim Hayden of Compass and Cassandra Chastain of Engel & Volkers.

The home’s primo Napa Valley location is less than a mile to the town’s quaint Main Street, home to boutiques, bakeries, restaurants, cafes, and wine shops.

The open-concept, three-bedroom residence will require zero maintenance for the next owner, which is rare for a property now 50 years old. What’s extra appealing about the home is that it’s proof that faux villas aren’t the only type of home to buy in Napa Valley.

“St. Helena has a diverse variety of architectural styles,” says Hayden. “On a drive through town, one notices a great number of remodeling and building projects taking place.”

“The house inspired me to remodel what was already wonderful,” says the homeowner, who has built, designed, and remodeled homes in California since 1974. She fell in love with the glass walls between the courtyard and the rest of the house as well as the built-in speakers in the rooms. Other highlights she found intriguing included a wine cellar and a walk-in pantry off the kitchen.

After her remodel, the home is now a Zen-like paradise with numerous outdoor areas for swimming, dining, or relaxing. There’s a mix of ferns and Japanese maples, along with beautiful lighting. Two creeks run through the property, and the courtyard offers a tranquil respite from the outside world.

Inside, there’s a new water heater, radiant floor heating, skylights, and a kitchen with reverse-osmosis water filter. Most rooms feature large porcelain floor tiling and new windows, though the bedrooms have new carpeting.

From the skylights to the windows, all changes were made to further connect the home with nature. A shining example is in the master bath, where a free-standing soaking tub (another new addition) is lit by a skylight and separated from a garden by a wall of glass. Vaulted ceilings in the bedrooms and living room also make the home feel bright and airy.

During the kitchen’s renovation, the old cabinets were removed and the space opened up to the living and dining rooms.

In the galley kitchen, new granite countertops plus high-end appliances further make the space an entertainer’s delight.

For those who love to read, there’s plenty of space to store books, including a home office with two built-in desks and bookshelves. An entire wall in a hallway facing the glass-walled courtyard features built-in bookshelves.

While a home in the heart of Napa Valley wine country will attract a mix of area residents and international buyers, Hayden and Chastain are targeting locals.

“We anticipate that buyers may be San Francisco–area dwellers looking for a second home in the wine country, or local winery/estate owners looking to downsize to a single-level, edge-of-town residence,” says Chastain. “Both of these profiles require a move-in ready property.”

She also thinks the buyer will be drawn to St. Helena for the town’s charm. With only 6,000 residents, it’s “a sophisticated small town, agricultural in nature, with Michelin-star restaurants, fine shops, and a tight-knit, generously supportive community,” says Chastain.
