Big Sur’s $12M Hathaway Lodge Floats Onto the Market for the First Time

Big Sur

Wayne Capili and Glen McDowell for Sotheby’s International Realty

A 101-acre property located in Big Sur, CA, offers respite among the redwoods. Owned by the same family for almost a century, it’s now available for the first time, with a price tag of $11,995,000.

“The pictures just don’t do it justice,” says the listing agent, Vilia Kakis Gilles with Sotheby’s International Realty-Carmel Rancho Brokerage. “It’s pretty rare. The thing is, sometimes you get forest, sometimes you get ocean. You don’t always get both—and with this magnitude. And throw into that mix, the magnificent, lodge-style home, and amenities like an elevator and a commercial kitchen, a full-time caretaker’s house, it’s quite unique.”

Known as Hathaway Lodge after the Los Angeles family who purchased the acreage back in the 1920s, it has served as a vacation getaway for generations of the family, who originally traveled by horse and buggy and stayed in rustic cabins.

Nowadays, an owner can zoom to the area by Tesla, and the digs have also been brought into modern times. Back in the 1950s, the original cabins were torn down and replaced with a 6,300-square-foot midcentury redwood structure that was updated in the 1990s and is designed for large gatherings.

Another piece of the property’s allure: Set on over 101 acres, it includes four contiguous parcels that span the redwood forest of Torre Canyon, all the way to the ocean, with coastal views. Along with the main residence, the enormous property includes a two-bedroom caretaker’s home, a workshop that opens on both sides, and a four-car garage with an additional workshop space.

There’s also an adorable gazebo apparently built to shelter the family’s beloved dogs, which offers a dog door out to a fenced area. Of course, humans can also enjoy the space.

The main lodge includes six bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, plus a large galley kitchen with commercial appliances, and living and family rooms with many modern amenities, including an elevator, wet bar, sauna, large study, and utility room.

In a nod to safety, a fire suppression system with water tanks, fire hoses, and fire hydrants can be found throughout the property. In addition, the land has its own spring-fed water system, along with a well.

The unspoiled land offers miles of trails within the property, which has never been open to the public, and includes soaring redwoods.

A buyer with a keen interest in total privacy and truly unplugging may want to make an offer on the property.

But the large offering could also be a corporate retreat, Kakis Gilles suggests.

“Everything is really dialed in to be able to handle large groups. The living room is enormous. You could handle 30 people staying there,” she says.

While inspiration could strike, the setting could also lull any stressed-out visitors into a state of bliss.

“The reason I call it the unicorn of Big Sur is that you have all options covered,” Kakis Gilles says. “If you’re a mountains person, you have those views. If you are a redwood person, you have that setting. If you have an oceanfront person who wants to look at the Pacific Ocean, you have that option. It’s all covered within this offering.”
