Need a Retreat? The B-52s’ Kate Pierson Selling Her Colorful Catskills Compound

New to the market in New York’s Catskills—a popular getaway from Manhattan—is a nine-unit property being sold by the B-52s singer Kate Pierson.

In 2004, Pierson opened the property (dubbed Kate’s Lazy Meadow) in Shandaken, NY, with her wife, Monica Coleman.

Now “they’re ready for the next chapter,” says listing agent E. Elizabeth Peters, of Sotheby’s International Realty.

The couple own two other hospitality projects: Kate’s Lazy Desert, an eclectic collection of Airstream trailers in Southern California, and Kate’s Lazy Cabin, in Lake Hill, NY.

“We hope to pass the baton to someone who can use this unique property to its full potential—as a wedding venue or as a family and friends compound,” says Pierson. “It’s truly special, and each room has been carefully and personally curated by Monica and me. But now it’s time for Monica, a gifted ceramic artist and jewelry artisan, and me to focus on our artistic endeavors. I’ll be putting out my second solo album this year, and the B-52s have some big plans in the works.”

The 6.5-acre lot with views of the Catskill Mountains and Esopus Creek frontage includes a caretaker’s apartment. The units are all decked out like it’s the 1950s, right on down to the retrofitted kitchens awash in robin’s-egg blue, icy pink, and mint green hues.

The units feature period decor, including knotty-pine paneling, lounge chairs with atomic-era upholstery, tiered fiberglass lampshades, checkerboard vinyl flooring, Eames lounge chairs, and a suspended fireplace. Guests also have access to a fire pit and Japanese-style outdoor spa for further communing.

“Potential buyers have mostly been in the hospitality industry,” says Peters. “It’s definitely a very specific buyer. It’s got this very quirky design sensibility.”

Though the property is being sold with nearly everything included, from the bedsheets to the midcentury furnishings, the trademark is not for sale. That means the next owner will need to come up with an equally fun name.

“Pretty much everything you see in the photographs will be included except for a few pieces of personal art,” says Peters.

What’s drawing people to the Catskills these days? Peters cites trout fishing, skiing, and motorbiking, as well as “proximity to New York City” and “new farm stands and restaurants.” By car, Manhattan is a two-hour trip.

“It’s having a renaissance,” Peters says of the formerly sleepy region which is now home to boutique properties like Urban Cowboy Lodge, The Shandaken Inn, Hotel Kinsley, and Eastwind Hotel & Bar. “There’s so much interest in the Catskills now.”

“I’m getting calls from all over the country, but the showings so far are from New York City or the New York metropolitan area,” says Peters.”I love showing this property to buyers and seeing their eyes open wide with delight the minute they walk into one of the cabins. Every time I go into one of the rooms, I find something new and different, whether it’s a gnome sculpture hiding behind a lamp or a UFO drawing pinned to the wall.”
