Nothing Says ‘I Love New York’ Like a $30M Duplex Condo With Central Park Views

Upper East Side luxury condo

Douglas Elliman

The retired ad executive responsible for the catchy “I Love New York” campaign is now touting her duplex apartment, which she has placed on the market for $27.95 million.

Mary Wells Lawrence, a longtime New Yorker, also showed some love for New York City real estate when she purchased the two-floor condo in 2005 for $18.75 million, realtor.com® records show.

Covering the 38th and 39th floors of a 42-story building on the Upper East Side, the spectacular space offers high ceilings, large entertaining areas, and Central Park and city views through oversized windows.

Spanning 4,915 square feet, with four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, the luxury abode is accessed by a private elevator, which leads to a grand entry foyer and central gallery.

The main level features a large corner living room with high ceilings, oversized windows, and a wood-burning fireplace. The layout also includes a formal dining room and a library.

In addition, the large kitchen includes stainless-steel appliances, a center island, and a windowed breakfast area.

From the floating glass-and-steel staircase, head to the upper floor, to find the oversized master bedroom suite with views, a huge walk-in closet, and a spalike master bath with both a shower and tub. The other three bedrooms, also on the upper floor, are also en suite.

Given the pandemic, the listing also includes some great social-distancing options, with two lower-floor apartments included in the sale. They could be used for guests, staff, or even as home office or school setups.

Built in 1998, the white-glove tower comes with door attendants, concierge service, valet parking, and allows pets. Other perks include a state-of-the-art fitness center, temperature-controlled wine cellar storage, and 24-hour security. The monthly maintenance cost is $10,986.

Wells Lawrence was the founder and president of the ad agency Wells, Rich, Greene, which created memorable campaigns for Alka-Seltzer, Ford Motor Co., and Proctor & Gamble. The “I Love New York” slogan graces T-shirts, mugs, and other souvenirs galore, to this day.

Now 92 years old, the pioneer leaves quite a legacy. She was the “first woman to own and run a major national agency [and] became the first woman to be chief executive of a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange,” according to a 2002 profile in the New York Times.

She sold her firm in 1990 for $160 million, the Times noted.

Steven Cohen, Timothy Malone, and Sarah Silva of Douglas Elliman, and Paddy Dring of Knight Frank hold the listing.
