A home with a wealth of reasons to recommend it is now on sale in Venice, CA. A famous architect designed it, using wood from a legendary venue. A famous couple owns it, and it has a killer ocean view.

The 7,102-square-foot house sits on a rare double lot just a block from the beach, and it’s on the market for $14 million.

Most of the wood used to clad the home’s exterior is recycled from benches at the Hollywood Bowl, the iconic music venue.

“You can see the seat numbers on it. It’s very cool,” says the listing agent, Tami Pardee. “They’re not in your face, so you don’t notice them [right away]. They’re very subtle.”

According to the Los Angeles Daily News, the Hollywood Bowl replaced its Alaskan yellow cedar benches in 2014, at a cost of $1.6 million. Millions of people sat on the benches at the legendary venue between 1981 and 2014.

An environmental architect, David Hertz, obtained the wood and incorporated it into his design for this amazing five-bedroom, nine-bathroom house.

According to Hertz’s website, his firm designs and builds sustainable and restorative buildings.

He designed the house featured in the Showtime series “Californication,” along with many other residential projects. Pardee tells us that some people collect houses Hertz has designed.

“He does a lot of reuse in his houses,” she notes. “[Hertz] is known to reclaim and reuse, so things don’t go to waste. He’s a genius.”

In keeping with the environmentally friendly theme, the home has solar electrical and thermal systems, natural ventilation, reclaimed teak flooring, and energy-efficient lighting.

As with many modern homes throughout Southern California, the home was designed with a seamless indoor-outdoor flow.

“The entire top level is the kitchen and dining experience,” says Pardee. “It all goes out into a deck that is an extension of the kitchen.”

That allows for indoor/outdoor dining, with ocean views.

Anna Paquin and her husband, Stephen Moyer, who met while they were starring in the HBO series “True Blood,” are the home’s current owners.

They bought the property for just over $1.2 million in 2010, when there was just a small house on the property.

The original one-bedroom home now serves a guesthouse for the Hertz-designed creation built in 2017.

Luxe features of the design include a sauna, gym, elevator, and a semi-indoor pool.

The pool is covered by parts of the house, but is not completely enclosed. Pardee says it’s rare to have a pool in Venice, because it’s is so close to the beach.

An upstairs office provides a workspace with a great view, which is perfect for a creative type—or for any other buyer, for that matter.

“It’s really for somebody that appreciates beautiful architecture and wants an ocean view,” Pardee says.

“I call it a soulful house, because when you walk in, you can just take a deep breath and feel like you’re home. The home almost gives you a big hug when you walk in. It’s very nurturing and very inviting.”
