The fabulous New York City mansion featured in “The Royal Tenenbaums,” the 2001 movie directed by Wes Anderson, is now up for rent for the first time in decades.

And there’s no need to fake an illness to be welcomed home, in the style of Gene Hackman’s title character, Royal Tenenbaum. All you need is rent money. The whole home is available for $20,000 a month.

Anderson is well-known for his choice of charming locations and his highly detailed sets. In “The Royal Tenenbaums,” with its ensemble cast including Gwyneth Paltrow, Ben Stiller, Luke Wilson, Angelica Huston, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, and Danny Glover, the rambling red-brick town house of the dysfunctional Tenenbaum family takes center stage.

Every room contains not only space for high drama, but plenty of spots where the quirky characters can covertly puff a cigarette.

The fictional family had grown up in the house, located on the fictional street of Archer Avenue. The plot surrounded the illness of Royal, the patriarch, prompting a family reunion at the Harlem landmark, which features room after glorious room filled with ornate details.

So that the residence could be reimagined for Anderson’s vision, the home’s owners reportedly held off on proposed renovations in the early 2000s.

The turreted four-story building from 1899, which has since been restored, has a tale worthy of the silver screen.

Developed by Jacob D. Butler and designed by Adolph Hoak, the sprawling home once belonged to the attorney Charles H. Tuttle, who ran (unsuccessfully) for governor of New York in 1930, against Franklin D. Roosevelt.

However, Tuttle was a winner in real estate. The 100-feet wide Flemish Revival mansion spans 6,000 square feet and comes with six bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, a formal living room, formal dining room, butler kitchen, family room, chef’s kitchen, office, and garden.

The first three floors of the four-floor townhouse are served by an elevator.

The front entrance is located at the side of the home. Located on a corner lot, the space boasts three exposures, with over 50 windows.

Original well-preserved details include stained-glass windows, extensive original woodwork, and six gas-operated fireplaces.

A tenant doesn’t need to bring much, because the interiors come furnished, according to the listing. It’s ideal for a jet-setter who could use a luxurious Hamilton Heights home to enjoy while staying in town.

Although the structure is 122 years old, many elements, such as the kitchen and bathrooms, have been updated and meld seamlessly with the antique details of the vintage spread.

Located way uptown on 144th Street, the residence is nevertheless a short subway ride to Midtown. Other notable perks include the picturesque Riverside Park and Riverbank State Park along the Hudson, on the neighborhood’s western edge. Countless dining and shopping options abound on nearby Amsterdam and Broadway.

Spencer Means with Compass holds the listing.
