Soak in Space Needle Vistas in a Grand Mansion With Seattle’s ‘Best View’

A luxurious house on a hill in Seattle with panoramic views of the city is available for only the third time since 1902.

The four-level mansion on Warren Avenue North is on the market for $9.2 million, and you can watch the sun rise and set from the same room on the top floor.

“It legitimately has the best view of downtown Seattle of any single-family home,” says co-listing agent Wes Jones. “It’s just unparalleled. It really feels like you are looking eye to eye with the Space Needle.”

Originally built for Seafirst Bank founder W.J. Whitney as a present for his daughter, the 10,000-square-foot home has five bedrooms and 7.5 bathrooms.

“It’s just beautiful. Everything is super high-end,” says co-listing agent Melissa Waller. “It’s such a grand mansion.”

The sellers, who bought the house in 1996, had originally planned to turn the structure into condos, but opted instead to restore it, Waller explains.

They imported 250,000 pounds of marble and granite for the counters and flooring throughout the house and exterior.

A few of the original chandeliers remain, but 21 of the light fixtures were custom-made in Italy and plated in gold. Much of the woodwork throughout the home is original.

But there was a crucial import—also from Italy—that elevated the bathrooms to a new level of luxury.

“There’s a gold-plated luxury bidet,” Jones says with a laugh. “You’re not going to find that anywhere else. What’s an opulent mansion without a gold-plated bidet?”

Actually, there are three of these gilded fixtures in the home, Waller adds. “Third-floor master bath, second-floor master bath, and bath off the second-floor sunroom.”

Both agents say the home—while undeniably grand—is homey and livable. The main living areas are on the first and second floors, with conveniences like multiple laundry areas and kitchens.

“There’s a breakfast kitchen on the second floor right by the master bedroom,” Waller says.

Two bedrooms could serve as master suites, and both come with large seating areas and en suite bathrooms.

The basement has a pool table, home theater, wine cellar, and gym.

“It’s so big, it just keeps going,” Jones says. “When I first went through, I thought we were at the top floor, but there was one more floor. It’s never ending.”

The home has three floors and a basement, and sits at a higher elevation than anything else in the historic Queen Anne neighborhood. The top floor wasn’t part of the original structure.

“It was an additional story that was added on as Seattle started to develop. It has well over 180-degree views,” Jones explains. The views include the ocean, Mount Rainier, all of downtown, Lake Union, and more. “I’m not sure there are many other places that have that type of view.”

The top floor boasts a kitchen, dining area, bar and seating area—basically everything necessary to host a grand soiree.

“It just really takes your breath away,” Waller says. “This is the party room. This is where all of the entertaining can happen. That room is just absolutely stunning.”

Waller and Jones say they could see the mansion staying as a single-family home or perhaps being used as a corporate event space.

“It feels almost like a place where weddings should be held,” Waller says. “You walk into this grand mansion. It just feels like there’s just so much potential there.”

There is no garage parking, but that’s in the works.

“The owners are planning to put in a covered garage, so they are working with architects and the city to get permits for that,” Waller says. “They’re in the process.”

Until then, there’s parking available on surrounding streets.

“Queen Anne is one of the oldest and most sought-after communities in Seattle. It’s so close to downtown, overlooking Seattle and the water,” Jones explains. “There’s real community up there.”
