The race car driver Lewis Hamilton has sold his pricey penthouse, the New York Post has reported. Property records show the luxury pad in the Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan sold in November 2021 for $49.5 million.

The pad purchased by the Formula One driver had apparently never been occupied.

Winding road to a sale

The champion racer picked up the triplex for $43,991,454 in 2017. Two years later, the penthouse returned to the market for a whopping $57 million. That eyebrow-raising price tag earned it the title of our most expensive home of the week.

In early 2020, with no buyers on the horizon, the home was relisted with a price drop, at $52 million.

In September 2021, another price cut brought the listing down to $49,500,000. A buyer raced in to snag the pristine apartment for that exact amount.

Even with the price reduction, the sale still ranks as the biggest downtown sale of the year, the Post noted. And the British-born champ zooms away with a sizable profit on his investment.

As for the driver, he’s now parked at another swanky spot nearby. He splashed out $40.7 million in 2019 for a condo at 70 Vestry, the Post reports, where Gisele Bündchen and Tom Brady also have a home.

Sensational space

Hamilton’s basically brand-new abode is spectacular.

The luxe layout offers an internal elevator, a rooftop with a plunge pool, and downtown skyline views. It’s notable for being the largest unit in the building. And the property comes with two parking spaces.

With six bedrooms and 6.5 bathrooms, the massive space combines three units and spans 8,908 square feet. Highlights include soaring 20-foot ceilings, multiple terraces, and original elements including exposed wood beams.

Converted from a 19th-century bookbindery factory, the light-filled space features pine beams with steel fittings and 17 restored windows.

An additional 3,426 square feet of private outdoor terraces feature an outdoor kitchen, dining area, and river views.

Inside, the living space includes an open dining room, a library or den with a gas fireplace, and a custom-designed chef’s kitchen with marble island.

In addition, the unit includes a master suite with a gas fireplace, an en suite spa bathroom, and a separate dressing room with its own windows.

On the top floor, a family room opens out to the terrace, and includes a fireplace, powder room, and wet bar. An elevator reaches all three levels, as does the key-locked building elevator.

Converted to condos in 2017, the landmarked building from 1882 has had many A-list owners, including Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, Harry Styles, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Rebel Wilson, according to the Post.

With just 53 units and eight stories, the celeb-friendly design offers drive-in, drive-out garage access, a big bonus if you want to keep away from the paparazzi. It’s close to the Holland Tunnel, as well as outdoor destinations such as the waterfront and the Hudson River Greenway.

Perks for the residents include 24-hour door attendants, a concierge, and a fitness center with a 70-foot indoor lap pool.

Hamilton, 36, has won seven Formula One world championships.
