Replica Firehouse In New Hampshire

If you’re in search of a smoking hot property, this full-size replica of Boston’s Engine 21 firehouse in Thornton, NH, will stoke your interest. A large bay door out front serves as a not-so-subtle tip that this house is not your normal home in the woods of central New Hampshire.

On the market for $599,000, the two-bedroom, two-bathroom home was built in 2004 by John Cullen. He was never a firefighter, but was forever an enthusiast, who respected the trade and worked as a reporter for the Boston Globe.

“The owner of the home had a passion for firefighters and essentially built a museum here,” says the listing agent, Susan Hammond of Hammond Wheeler Realty. “Unfortunately, he passed away in 2018, and the family is selling all of the memorabilia separately. He didn’t run the home as a business—he just wanted to build a replica of a firehouse.”

Just a short walk to the Welch-Dickey trailhead and the Mad River, this private lot also offers 2.73 acres of space.

Inside the 3,137-square-foot home, you’ll see an array of firefighting memorabilia and ephemera. There’s even a fire pole in place, should a new owner need to shuttle quickly between floors. Hammond told us the furnishings seen in the photos are available for sale separately.

A tiled mudroom opens up to a spacious foyer with hardwood floors. A large office, ideal for working from home, comes complete with custom built-ins.

An open living, kitchen, and dining area features a fireplace and leads out to a back patio. Modern amenities include recessed lighting, wainscoting, skylights, granite countertops, and stainless-steel appliances.

Upstairs, there are two oversized bedrooms with a full bathroom and a large family room. In one of the bedrooms, you’ll find firehouse-style cots with wooden chests at the foot of each bed, for a full bunkhouse vibe.

A large master bedroom also features a sitting room with the aforementioned pole.

Adjacent to the main house is a 1,622-square-foot heated garage space that housed the majority of the property’s firefighting memorabilia.

For a buyer who isn’t a collector, Hammond said it could also be used to store all sorts of toys—snowmobiles, an RV, a boat, or even a collection of cars. There’s also a detached shed in the backyard for additional storage.

If those spots aren’t enough, you can fill the unfinished basement (with workbench) with even more of your belongings. With all the space, there’s plenty of room for a buyer with a lot of stuff.

Hammond believes the next buyer is likely to be someone looking to make good use of the bay space, where the bulk of the museum was located.

“We have had a lot of interest from firefighters,” he says, “but I think some were just interested in seeing all of the memorabilia. The opportunities here are really endless.”
