The former Florida Gators and South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier is letting go of his oceanfront vacation home in St. Augustine, FL. He’s asking $5.8 million.
Spurrier has owned this Crescent Beach getaway since buying the land in 1995 for $400,000. He then built the beach house, which was finished in 2010.
Spurrier’s primary residence is reportedly in Gainesville, FL, but he has vacationed in the beach town for over 50 years with three generations of his family, according to the St. Augustine Record.
The celebrated coach has been a regular at the Marsh Creek Country Club since 1988, a course he calls “fair, but tough.”
Now, at 75, he is ready to turn over his massive land holding to another owner.
The “Ole Ball Coach,” as he’s affectionately known, tested the waters with a $6 million listing price in June 2020. The price dropped to its current ask last fall.
The expansive 7,734-square-foot layout offers five bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, and two half-bathrooms.
Across three stories connected by an elevator, the spacious place includes many hangout areas and plenty of rooms for family members and guests.
The upper level offers views of both the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic Ocean from the wraparound balconies.
The top floor has a chef’s kitchen, complete with two cooktops, three ovens, a wine fridge, and walk-in pantry, along with a breakfast bar.
Meanwhile, the master suite features a separate sitting room, dual bathrooms and closets, plus a room currently in use as a gym.
An office with built-ins and a half-bathroom is also on the upper floor.
The ground floor has a kitchen, dining and living room, and two bedroom suites. Down one more floor, an enclosed walkway leads from the three-car garage, and includes a sauna and storage, as well as room for a gym. A hallway shot shows what appears to be quite a collection of sports memorabilia.
Above the garage is an apartment for guests with two bedrooms and a kitchenette.
The gated property also includes a private walkway to the ocean. A new owner could decide to add a pool or sport court, and trick out the outdoor living space with an outdoor kitchen. The outdoor area is already wired for a water feature and lighting.
If that isn’t enough room for you, the 2.58-acre parcel includes a vacant, buildable lot on the Intracoastal that could turn the property into a multifamily compound.
The popular former coach previously placed a South Carolina home on the market in 2017. He lived in that lake house while coaching the Gamecocks.
Spurrier attended the University of Florida, where he won the 1966 Heisman Trophy. As a coach, he returned to the Gators, leading the team from 1990 to 2001.
In 2005, he moved to the South Carolina football program, coaching the Gamecocks until retiring from coaching in 2015. He’s currently an ambassador and consultant to the University of Florida’s athletic department. The winning coach is just one of four who have been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach and a player.
