A midcentury-modern house that appeared on the popular 1980s-era sitcom “The Golden Girls”—and is full of original 1950s-era details—has swiftly sold for roughly $4 million, far above its original $2.999 million asking price.
Listing agent Rachelle Rosten of Douglas Elliman said she was amazed by the intense level of interest in the roughly 3,000-square-foot, four-bedroom house, which is located in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles and had been on the market only a couple of weeks. “I knew there were a lot of ‘Golden Girls’ fans in the world but I had no idea there were this many,” Ms. Rosten said.
The property was used on the first season of the show to represent the home of characters Blanche, Rose, Dorothy and Sophia at 6151 Richmond Street in Miami (no such actual address exists). For subsequent seasons, an exact replica of the house was built at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, according to a spokesperson for Walt Disney World.
Another potential attraction of the house was its retro interiors, which were never featured on the show. They include tall ceilings, lots of natural light, a Japanese-style porch and an original kitchen decked out in light turquoise and bright avocado green.
The listing generated lots of interest online and photos of the home circulated globally, resulting in 20 offers in 14 days after approximately 140 showings. The result was a bidding war among 9 people, Ms. Rosten said. The winners, a local family, are not particular fans of the show but appreciated the house’s architecture and location.
The most recent owners were David Noble Barry III, a lawyer with Southern California Edison, and his wife, Margaret Carr Barry, who lived there until their deaths in 2017 and 2019, respectively. Their son, James C. Barry, could not be reached for comment on the sale.
