A midcentury modern home in Michigan features such smart design—and HGTV accolades—that it garnered an offer within a few days of hitting the market.
The sellers (who were also the designers) listed the three-bedroom home in Grand Rapids for $500,000. That’s more than double the $235,000 they paid for the place in 2016.
Nearly every square inch of the 1,700-square-foot home has been adorned with luxury accoutrements, from Ann Sacks custom tiles in the kitchen backsplash to walnut floors throughout. All-white walls give the home freshness and vibrancy. The stunning design by Swatts & Co. Design Studio has been featured on HGTV as a “before and after” remodel, as well as on Apartment Therapy. The property is listed with Katie Karczewski of Keller Williams Grand Rapids East.
Built in 1954, the home was stripped to the studs for its makeover. The open floor plan was retained as well as the sliders in most rooms. The formerly drab exterior of neutral cream and gray is now painted a deep, midnight-blue with a lime-green door. A wood garage door offers a stylish contrast.
Green carpet throughout was ripped out in favor of the wood floors. In the master bath, the shower features white-tile walls. For the other bath, pink period wall tiles were swapped out for fun, geometric wallpaper in a Kelly-green shade. The former den is currently being used as a small third bedroom.
The home also has a new roof, new windows, and new electrical. Plumbing, HVAC, and cedar fencing were also recently installed.
The brand-new kitchen features a built-in bar with a wine fridge, a backsplash with custom tiles, and a waterfall island. Three walls of sliding doors in the dining room allow natural light to stream in, making it the ideal spot for morning coffee or hosting a brunch.
Mirroring the walnut flooring, the baths feature walnut vanities. Cement tile adorns the walls and—in the master bath—covers the heated floors. A wood-burning fireplace (original to the home) is in the living room.
Outdoor spaces have been revitalized as well, including the custom patio area.
For a family that is hugely into the outdoors, or juggles lots of activities, a renovated mudroom offers hooks for jackets, bags, and purses, plus built-in storage. Behind this space is a built-in desk as well as a stackable washer and dryer.
